We have a new accessory…

Remember way back HERE, when I told you about Liam’s eye problem?

Well, we’ve moved on to the next step in his treatment.  GLASSES.

Now, to recap – he has Strabismus:  Intermittent Exotropia.  From www.merck.com:

Intermittent Exotropia: Intermittent exotropia is outward turning of the eyes that occurs intermittently, usually when the child is looking at distant objects or when the child is tired or ill. Intermittent exotropia is detectable after the age of 6 months.

Intermittent exotropia that is of small magnitude, occurs infrequently, and does not cause symptoms may not require treatment because amblyopia does not usually develop. If symptoms of eye strain from an uncorrected refractive error become troublesome or if attempting to bring the eyes into alignment becomes troublesome, eyeglasses may be used. In more severe cases, surgery may be needed.

It’s not bad, thankfully, but still should be corrected if at all possible.  We started with patching one eye (alternating) every night for two hours, and we’ve had marginal success after six or so months.  Now we’re adding in the glasses with lenses called Yoked Prisms – sort of “braces for the eyes”.  Luckily his actual vision is perfect, so these glasses will hopefully just be needed for a few years at most.

The bottom line – we’re trying to avoid corrective surgery, so we’re doing everything else possible first.  Between his Opthamologist and his Optometrist, we’re pulling out all the stops!

He’s not crazy about wearing them, but after the initial few minutes of crabbing every day, he’s very good about it.  And, I may be biased, but I think he looks pretty darn cute in them.  I let him pick his own frames out of a choice of maybe ten, and he chose the ones that are almost exactly like mine  Go figure.

(I love this kid…*sigh*)

If any of you have experience with this, please comment or email – we’d love to learn as much as we can!  In the meantime, enjoy some photos of Mr. Cool in his new specs.  (Click on thumbnails to enlarge in new window):

My husband wore glasses as a tot, had the corrective surgery before he went to preschool. Not sure if he had the same issues that your Liam has. His eye still wanders, especially when he’s tired, but he’s got better than perfect vision!
If you ask me all the cool kids wear glasses anyway. :)
