The National (and Family) Pastime

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.”
- James Earl Jones as Terence Mann in
“Field of Dreams”
Baseball is big in our house.
It’s sort of a family tradition…

We went to a Norfolk Tides game Saturday night, and it was great. Liam had taken an unexpectedly long nap, so we felt pretty confident in keeping him up. (The game started at 7:15.) By 4:45, while he was STILL napping, we made the decision to go. Brian hopped online, got some great tickets and had them waiting at Will Call. We got everyone dressed and ready, and off we went to the Park!
I think Brian was anxious to see if Liam’s enjoyment of the Carolina Mudcats game had more to do with Katie and Dean being there than the actual game itself. Well, he needn’t have worried. Liam LOVES baseball. He stays in his seat. He watches the game. He yells “CHARGE” after the trumpet, he eats hot dogs, he sings “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh inning stretch. He loves the mascots, he talks to the people sitting around us, he cheers on the players and yells “Good Job!” when he hears the crack of the bat. He NEVER whines, or asks to go home…matter of fact, the game went into extra innings, so we decided to go. We had to drag him away!
Yep. Evidently…like generatons of O’Laughlin men…the game is in his blood.

Daddy explaining “Knickerbocker Rules” …;)

Meeting Reggy, the Guest Mascot. Liam LOVED him…he was awed to get a hug.

Good seats, eh?

Less than thrilled with the face painting. It lasted about eight minutes before he asked me to wipe it off…

10:30 pm. Two and a half hours past bedtime, and still going strong!

I think Liam needs to come to Omaha and experience the College World Series. Seriously.
